SPOTTED: Bold Reds and Soft Tailoring

I spotted this girl on the street and the bright reds of her outfit and the floral design on her skirt made me immediately think of future trends. It made me think of the “Modern Myth” macro trend that WGSN had identified for Autumn/Winter 2014/15. This trend concentrates on the importance of mythological figures, patterns and motifs directing towards a global visual culture that is growing within the richer and more locally relevant products of designers (WGSN Creative Directive Team, 2012). The WGSN Paris Stylefile for A/W 13/14 mentions how fiery red hues are generating a bold look for tailoring with pops of contrasting black (Bibby, 2013). This macro trend is obvious through the increasing world trend of symbols, lifestyles and traditions of global consumers being made modern (, 2013), as seen in her modern take of the oriental floral print on her skirt. This luxe look has elements of mannish tailoring, which Paris confirmed to be one of the leading looks of the season (Bibby, 2013). There is an obvious element of architectural structuring as well as detail in the jacket, which Vogue (2013) has made known as an incoming trend. The way she has put together the deep hues of red with the soft tailored jacket has created a bold look. The bold red, yet softly tailored jacket combines the macro trend of the “Modern Myth” with the catwalk style of boyfriend blazers and boxy coats. The appearance of the gorgeous oriental-like floral print on her skirt in the affectionate hues of red has been spotted in the street style of Paris (Velásquez, 2013). We can see the “Modern Myth” trend of ‘nature being the architect (WGSN Creative Direction Team, 2012), due to her colour choice of deep reds, soft tailoring of her jacket and oriental-style floral prints.

SPOTTED: Futuristic and Flirtatious

When I spotted this girl I had to take her photo. I noticed the contrast between her retro style top and the full-size modern skirt. This mixture of these pieces had me think of the “Industrial Evolution” macro trend that WGSN has identified for Autumn/Winter 2014/15. This trend is all about the changing design processes of new machines and looks at the transition between the digital and analogue eras (WGSN Creative Direction Team, 2013). The utilitarian design of the trend focuses on the changing relationship between man and machine, in an artisan direction (WGSN Trends Team, 2013). This macro trend makes me think of a retro space age, throwing aesthetics of vintage 1940s and 30s into the mix with futuristic designs. The small bias ruffle on her skirt has been prominent in Paris, modernizing the peplum and creating a new silhouette to this season’s 1940s tailored looks (Bibby, 2013). Her eye-catching skirt full of volume and texture has a futuristic grunge girl style and a similar street style has been seen in Paris and Milan (Velásquez, 2013). Also, the Milan catwalks for A/W 2013 featured in Vogue (2013) carry a punk trend and a maximalist trend, with designs of wild volume and deep hues. The polka dots on her top are apparent in the Miu Miu Fall Winter 2013 fashion show (Bryan Boy, 2013) and have been making an appearance in street fashion (McKessar, 2013). The WGSN Womenswear Team (2013) identified a “Punk Grunge” trend with rebellious attitude, and colours of reds, blacks and pinks, as well as a “Flirtatious 50s” trend. This girl’s look has elements of both these trends, with her fit and flare silhouette, use of retro polka dots, and the bold use of pink. This creates a futuristic and industrial look with a mix of retro aesthetics. Her platform sandals also scream space age!

SPOTTED: 1940s Vintage

I was very interested by the playful, yet classy style of this young man. The pattern on his shirt especially made me think of a 1940s vintage inspired print which can be seen in Louise Goldin autumn winter 2013/14 as well as similar colours from 1940s-inspired collection by Ulyana Sergeenko (Keating, 2013). This trend of vintage 1940s inspired prints looks to interior fabrics and retro wallpaper designs for simple, yet playful geometrics with a handmade feel. The design on his shirt has a traditional textile look, while hues of green combined with cream and brown enhance this 40s trend (Keating, 2013). I asked him where he had found this shirt, and he told me he bought it from a thrift shop. The trend of thrift shopping in the 21st century is continuing to increase, with the ‘old becoming the new again’ (, 2013). Romy (2013) has identified how the ‘past is present for fall,’ describing how the Fall 13 catwalks are bringing back old styles. Indicative of this old becoming the new style, the WGSN Autumn/Winter 2014/15 macro trend that comes to mind is the “Modern Myth.” It involves an ‘ancient futurism’ with earthy hues of light olive greens and browns (WGSN Trends team, 2013). Creating a new modern future from the mythological and ancient past is what this trend incorporates (WGSN Creative Direction Team, 2013). The vintage 1940s inspired print on his shirt, mixed with the use of earthy tones incorporates this ‘old is the new’ trend, evident in the “Modern Myth” macro trend. The playful geometrics sourced from a previous time generates this ‘ancient futurism.’
